Green Button Alliance Executive Director: 2015-2018

It is with heavy heart that we are sharing this news with you: Barry Haaser, one of the founders and the first Green Button Alliance (GBA) Executive Director, from its inception in 2015 until his retirement in 2018, passed away on Saturday, the 26th of March, 2022, at the age of 62.

Barry was instrumental in establishing the GBA and, as he always liked to call it, “herding the cats”—taking what was once a loosely organized effort between government, the private sector, several associations, and individual industry experts, and pulling them together forming a unified alliance to become the single, go-to place for all things “Green Button.”

Barry not-only served the community of the Green Button Alliance but also provided executive leadership and start-up expertise to the OpenADR Alliance, LonMark International, the Wi-SUN Alliance, the EIS Alliance; the Dash 7 Alliance; the Home Lighting Control Alliance, and the U-SNAP Alliance through his association-management firm, Lakeview Consulting Group. He served on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee, was formerly an officer on the Board of Directors for the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), and served as a member of the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB). Barry was also an active Rotarian for decades.

Prior to founding Lakeview in 2010, Barry spent 15 years with Echelon Corporation, where he held marketing and business-development positions in the U.S. and Europe. Previously, he served as Vice-President of Marketing at Alacritech and as the Director of Marketing at Saratoga Systems.

Barry left association management in 2018 after progressing Parkinson's Disease made the work difficult. Although living everywhere from England to California, he retired in Niceville, Florida, with his wife, Paula, near family.

Barry was a goal-oriented, active figure in the high-tech, standards-and-association world and left difficult shoes to fill when he retired; now leaving difficult holes to fill in the hearts of those that had the pleasure of knowing him. He will be greatly missed.

Friends and family held a Celebration of Life at the Morgan Hill Community & Cultural Center in California on June 12th, 2022.
